10 Steps To Know What You Want While Dancing + 4 More

By Vincent Leleux

“The time for distinct ‘teacher’ and ‘student’ roles on this planet is over – it’s time to release the ego’s attachment to them. We are all equal; we all have the answers and the abilities inside of us.” ~Keisha Crowther

Have you ever realized that nobody knows better what is good for you than yourself? Only you can ever know what is good and right for you?

When I first had this realization, it was such an event for me, such a revolution so to say. It happened while I was dancing or just after dancing, as dancing makes me feel so good and so present in my body, that in the moment, nothing else existed, and I was connected to all that is.

If you don’t know what I am talking about or feel you could discover or create more of it in your life, it’s actually very simple to put in place:

Here are some tips to allow you to create that magic moment:

  1. Slow down: we are living such stressed lives that we forget too often to slow down. It’s only when we slow down that we can feel and know what is living deep inside us, allow each of us to be who we really are and makes us feel completely alive.
  2. Make some time for yourself: create a time when you are sure no one will disturb you, 30 minutes for this exercise the first time would be enough, you can always make it longer later on if you wish.
  3. Make some space for yourself, a place where you can move and extend / expand your body in all directions without any risk of bumping into something or someone. Move some furniture or stuffs that are in the way. That could be the best occasion to move things around for a change or to clear some clutter.
  4. Find a music you like, prepare the sounds system and play it: I advise a music that you know you like to dance to. Try to remember one music you loved to dance to, like one you remember you couldn’t help getting up and moving.
  5. Dance Dance Dance like nobody is watching. Because really nobody is watching you. Everybody is too busy with oneself to watch others, most of the time. So do it for yourself. So give yourself to the music and to the dance.
  6. Let the music dance you. This is critically important, don’t conform to what you think or believe what dancing or “good” dancing is, let your body move to the music without any preconceived idea. Remember, nobody is watching you, not even yourself. It’s not meant to be seen, it’s meant to be experienced, felt.
  7. The only definition to dance is : meaningful movement to the music. Meaningful to the dancer, you in this case. meaningful to you and nothing/nobody else. When you stop dancing, close your eyes and breathe, breathe.
  8. Take a moment to pay attention to your feelings:
  9. What do you feel in the different parts of your body? Your legs, your hips, your feet, your belly, your back, your chest, your hands, your arms, your neck, your head…
  10. Does it feel good? Does it feel bad? Any pain? Is it cold?, is it hot? Do you feel the air on your skin? Do you feel the air comin in and out while you’re breathing? How does it feel? Do you feel the energy in the room?

Now, do whatever please you for some minutes, whatever you feel you need or want to do.

Now stop and ask yourself this simple question: what do you want to make more room to in your life? And what are you ready to reduce the time and space you are allocating to?

Repeat regularly this process, one a week is a good pace…

Here are some other tips you could progressively include in the process later on.

To come back to the relationship student / teacher, what will you teach yourself today, in other words what is the answer and abilities you will discover inside of you today?

Personally I just discovered I can easily and with much fun write blog posts like this one.

And I will now celebrate it with a dance, I have chosen my music, do you dance with me?

Life is good, enjoy it.

Thank you so very much for this post Vincent. I think I have been missing out on something in life! I have to admit that I rarely dance (well accept with my grand-daughter, who is just a year old). Yet your words have stirred some memories inside me, they have opened a door – that I will step through – Thank you :)
